Sandwich Massachusetts for Couples

Sandwich Massachusetts is our hometown, a quintessential New England town first incorporated in 1639, which makes it the oldest town on Cape Cod and one of the oldest settlements in the United States.

It is an ideal starting point for couples wanting to explore the Cape, with quaint Bed and Breakfasts, restaurants, historical and recreation sites and several antique and retail shops to keep you busy. It is quiet and, if you are expecting a lively nightlife, you should perhaps look further down Cape.

Sandwich Village

The Village is the most scenic part of Sandwich, complete with an idyllic white church which overlooks Shawme Pond and the Dexter Grist Mill. Located on Water Street, the First Church of Christ may look familiar to Elvis fans - it graced the cover of Elvis’s famous spiritual album.

During the summer, the church opens its doors to visitors from across the world. Be sure to take a peak inside because its architecture is quite lovely.

Right across the street from the First Church of Christ, is the Dexter Grist Mill. Built in 1654, it is a working mill right in the center of town. You can tour the small gristmill for $1.50 and the cornmeal is available for purchase for $7.50 a bag.

This area is a popular photographic spot for brides and graduates because it borders Shawme Pond. We actually had a family photo taken there when the kids were little (and Michael still had hair). Be sure to grab a drink of spring water from the public faucet, next to the Town Hall. (Wow! Fresh spring water that donsn't cost a buck a bottle, now there's a concept.)

The Town Hall is an impressive building which is not open for tours since it is a working municipal building. Plans are being made to renovate the second floor for use as a public meeting area.

A few steps away from the Dexter Grist Mill on Water Street is the Thornton Burgess Museum, dedicated to preserving the memory of famed children’s author Thornton Burgess who was born in Sandwich. Inside you’ll find memorabilia related to Thornton Burgess, a series of Harrison Cody illustrations, and homemade jams from the Green Briar Kitchen.

You can take a quick look at the Tussie Musie Herb Garden right outside the museum and enjoy the scenic views of Shawme Pond. Use the benches because if you sit on the sloping grass you may end up with more than grass stains on your bottom- there are plenty of geese who call Shawme Pond home. Hours are May - October, Monday thru Saturday, 10-4, Sunday 1-5. Admission is by donation ($2.00) Thornton Burgess

The museum offers delightful walking tours of the Village led by an actor portraying Thornton Burgess. The one-mile walk takes the participants through the Village as seen by Burgess during the summer of 1916. You’ll hear stories of his life in Sandwich during the 1870’s and 1880’s. Tours are generally scheduled for Thursday mornings during the summer months and cost $2.00 for Society members and $3.00 for non-members.

Continuing up Water Street, you’ll find the Hoxie House, just up the road from the Grist Mill. Built in 1675 for Reverend John Smith, his wife and their 13 children, it is the oldest house on Cape Cod. In the 1800’s retired whaling Captain Abraham Hoxie bought the property. Purchased by the town in the 1950’s, it was restored with period pieces and reflects a period in Sandwich’s long history. Open from mid June through October, the Hoxie House charges a mere $1.50 for admittance. These excellent tours are filled with interesting historical facts.

Heritage Museums and Gardens

About three quarters-of-a-mile form the center of town, heading west along Route 130, you'll find Heritage Museum and Gardens. You can walk there from the center of town, but do bear in mind that you'll be walking quite a lot once you get there, so you might be better off taing a short drive.

Three of Sandwich's twelve museums are located there, as well as some beautifilly landscaped gardens, some wooded trails, a cafe, and a concert stage.
